Spiced Orange Swirl Bread

Spiced Orange Swirl Bread

Spiced Orange Swirl Bread. Its sooo good. The bread is soft and it gives the gooey feeling of a cinnamon roll but elevated? Can you elevate a cinnamon roll? The orange zest and brown sugar together with cinnamon and ginger makes it the perfect amount of “spiced” and an awesome fall bread. I’ve made two of these loaves this week because we can’t get enough. Warm it up a little and have it for breakfast? forget about it.

Believe it or not the idea for this bread came while drinking wassail that had just enough orange to make it interesting and here we are. I started on this recipe the next day.

Lets make this bread

The first bit is pretty close to making cinnamon rolls. Make bread, rise bread, roll out.

Mix all the filling ingredients to make a paste and spread around to all the edges. I like to trim around the edges a bit just to keep it all squared and to make sure it fits in the loaf tin. Roll up the short side and roll it right to make sure you have as much swirl as possible. Seal the edges and place that seam side down and let the bread rest for another 40 minutes.

This will bake at 350 for 30 minutes. I like to add an egg wash just to give it a good shine. Add the orange glaze at the end and serve warm!

Ingredients
  • dough:
  • 2/3 cup warm whole milk
  • 3 tablespoon honey
  • 2 1/4 teaspoon active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoon softened butter
  • Filling and glaze:
  • 2 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground clove
  • 1 orange (zest and juice)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
Directions
  • Step 1 Activate yeast in the bowl of the stand up mixer. Warm up 2/3 cup of whole milk, add 1 tablespoon of honey and the yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until its foamy on top.
  • Step 2 Then add in flour, salt, 1 egg (save the other for egg wash), and butter. Attach dough hook to mixer and mix until all ingredients are combined and form a dough. Then knead or leave in mixer on medium speed (set at 4) for 5 minutes.
  • Step 3 Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel and let it rise at room temperature for 60-90 minutes or until doubled in size.
  • Step 4 While the dough is rising make the filling. In a small bowl, mix together sugars, butter, cinnamon, ginger, and clove. Zest the orange and use 2 tablespoons (save the rest for the icing) and juice of half of the orange. Mix together until a paste is formed.
  • Step 5 Once the dough has risen, punch down and turn out onto a floured surface. Roll out a rectangle about 9×16-18 inches. Pour the filling and spread out evenly to all edges of the dough. Starting with the short side roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seam together to seal up and place seam side down into a prepared bread loaf pan. Cover and let rise another 30-40 min.
  • Step 6 Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using the final egg make an egg wash (1 egg, 1 tablespoon of water mixed together). Brush over the top of the loaf.
  • Step 7 Bake for 30 minutes, until top is golden brown. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack.
  • Step 8 While the bread is cooling, make the glaze. Mix together powdered sugar, orange zest, orange juice.
  • Step 9 Once bread is cooled slightly, pour the glaze over the top, slice, and serve while warm.
